The Portuguese demonstrator of InteGrid project has completed the second demonstration trial where all the use cases are now under real demonstration with already collected results, KPIs and conclusions were obtained.
After recovering the project status as before COVID19 situation, it was possible to demonstrate InteGrid concept in full operation in Portugal, where the core platform GM-Hub, a market enabler tool developed on the top of DSO smartgrid ecosystem, enabled a wide scope of tools and functionalities which spans from the demonstration of advanced grid operation based on flexibility provided by end users (B2C+B2B) to demonstration of innovative energy services enabled by the DSO as market facilitator, fostering disruptive business models.
On the top of Mafra MV grid, it was demonstrated that the multi-period optimal power flow tools supplied by forcasting tools (accuracy of 97%) enables the optimization of the grid operation (day-ahead and Intraday-real time) based on the flexibility provided by 20 customers (wind farms, and B2B customers), through the GM-Hub. The flexibility mobilized was a total of 0,8 MW/ -8,2MW (positive/negative). Technical power losses where reduced (36€ daily) while ensuring the grid technical limits (0% voltage violations), according EN-50160. During 2 days, MV customers were able to fulfil the DSO flexibility activation requests with a success rate spanning from 40% (15 min acceptance) to 60% (60 min acceptance response). A specific case of Águas to Tejo Atlántico waste water facilities, proved to able to reply with up to 75% of theoretical available flexibility, when activated by the DSO in case of grid operation emergency. At the same time InteGrid tools were able to optimize these facilities energy profile, by reducing 10% of energy consumption and minimizing 3% of peak load consumption. Concerning the ancillary services market participation (although without regulatory framework in Portugal), a total of 5,3MW was identified as possible to participate in mFRR and RR markets with possible economics on 62 k€, where 8MW of tradeable flexibility would be requested.

Valverde and Alcochete LV grids where operated based on B2C flexibility provision, where forecasting tools and grid state estimator tools anticipated grid technical constraints (100% of voltage constraints solved) and then proposes to the grid operator which flexibility setpoints would solve such problems, based on the flexibility that the residential customers make available through the GM-Hub. About 13% of available flexibility available on the GM-Hub, was mobilized by the DSO. The above mentioned tools also helped the grid operator to detect 100% of the identified violations, only possible with this technology support.
The GM-Hub itself was able to successfully rely 98% of the services requested by its clients, while stakeholders satisfaction reaches 77%.
Considering the Home Energy Management System solution (HEMS, including PV, batteries and smart appliances) installed in 145 households (also including Caldas da Rainha) it was possible to demonstrate that load patterns become 6% flatten (difference between maximum and minimum consumption) and up to 56% of energy consumption was self-generated locally by PV panels. Customers peak consumption reduced 8%Nevertheless the behaviour change induced by COVID19 (most people still partially working at home) still need to be clarified as well as HEMS scheduling functionalities need to be better explained to customers in order to leverage InteGrid capabilities.
By last, but not least, the social energy network Local-Life, has demonstrated the capacity of remand respond societal schemes, induced an energy consumption reduction of 44%, showing an improvement of Self-awareness of household energy use (89%), Price awareness (86%) and Environmental awareness (92%).
InteGrid Project is now running on full speed and demonstration is being done in full operational environment. Results and conclusions are being obtained in line with project expectations.
